TLDR:

  • Rosendale Design illuminated Aragawa restaurant in London with paper pendants and traditional Japanese design.
  • The restaurant features a £900 cut of wagyu beef from Shiga prefecture and a private dining room with a Japanese kiln.

Interiors studio Rosendale Design used paper pendants to illuminate hand-painted red-and-gold walls in the first overseas outpost of Japanese steakhouse Aragawa in London. Set in a Mayfair townhouse, the restaurant boasts a £900 cut of wagyu beef along with traditional Japanese design elements.

The interior design, heavily influenced by traditional Japanese architecture, features pendant lights dangling through a void between floors, a wood-panelled reception area, and a private dining room with a Japanese kiln. More lanterns hang from the dark wood lattice ceiling in the main dining space, creating a dramatic and romantic atmosphere. The red colour palette is continued in the red velvet-lined seating, contrasting against white tablecloths.

Rosendale Design worked with a local manufacturer to recreate the kiln found in the original Aragawa restaurant in Tokyo, which opened in 1967 and became known as one of the priciest steak houses in the world. The feature kiln serves as a connection between the Tokyo and London locations.

The design features elements like hand-painted red-and-gold panels, Japanese lantern-inspired pendant lights, and a Japanese castle-inspired lattice ceiling. Overall, the design aims to provide an immersive experience for diners that blends traditional Japanese elements with a contemporary twist.
