TLDR:

  • North American Design 2024 series launched by Dezeen
  • Highlights include unique objects in Detroit, a raincoat that doubles as a camping tent by Nike, and a terracotta-tiled extension in London

This week on Dezeen, the North American Design 2024 series was launched, focusing on independent design across cities in North America. The series spotlights designers pushing boundaries in materials and forms within their local design communities.

The series kicked off with showcasing ten studios in Detroit, Michigan. In other news, an interactive video installation connecting New York City and Dublin was temporarily shut down due to poor behavior. Nike designed a raincoat that can also be used as a camping tent, and a terracotta-tiled extension in London was named the best home improvement project of the year.

British designer Thomas Heatherwick launched a master’s degree at Loughborough University focused on fostering architects to create “joyful architecture.” This week’s popular projects include a metal-clad apartment building in Philadelphia, a London home extension blending Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences, and a ferry terminal in Riga by Zaha Hadid Architects.

Overall, the week showcased innovative design projects and initiatives shaping the architecture and design landscape in North America and beyond.
