TLDR:

  • THISS Studio renovated a former warehouse in Shoreditch to create a vibrant office, coworking space, and recording studio for Common Knowledge.
  • The project focused on sustainability, honest materiality, and functionality, incorporating bespoke furniture and lighting.

The upper two levels of the warehouse were transformed by THISS Studio to create a new office, coworking space, and bespoke recording studio for Common Knowledge, a music management group. The focus of the project was to challenge the austerity and inaccessibility often associated with the music industry by creating a vibrant and flexible social hub that feels like a home away from home.

THISS Studio used bespoke furniture, lighting, and shelving to create a modular and dynamic space that facilitates knowledge sharing amongst music professionals and recording artists. Collaborating with Mitre and Mondays, the design considered sustainability and adaptability, ensuring that the furniture pieces could be easily moved to a different space in the future.

The renovation and reconfiguration of the third and fourth floors involved restoring and retrofitting the existing structure. Materials with acoustic qualities were carefully selected and integrated into their rawest forms to embrace the wear and tear of coworking. A tactile palette of cork, aluminum, and sycamore from a local London plane tree was used to create a sense of honesty in the space.

The design also focused on continuity and functionality, with custom aluminum bench seats, inbuilt desks, and cork panels for sound absorption. The recording studio, designed in collaboration with Noatune, featured acoustic insulation, fabric panels, bass traps, and diffusers to create an optimal acoustic environment for songwriting.

Overall, THISS Studio’s office, coworking space, and recording studio for Common Knowledge are characterized by honest materiality, functionality, and a convivial environment for music professionals to work, connect, share, and inspire.
